The Viroqua Area Foundation has raised $1.8 million dollars to update the outdoor athletic facilities in Viroqua. This community project was supported by alumni, community members, Viroqua school district staff and students. It couldn’t have been completed without the generosity of each and every donor. We would like to thank everyone that participated in this wonderful community project.

Our community has benefited by the use of a 6-lane track, tennis courts and football field that are heavily used for physical fitness, recreation and entertainment by the residents of Viroqua and Vernon County.  It was  a sad reality that the outdoor facilities in our community fell into a state of serious disrepair.  The football field floods whenever there was a heavy rain, the cracked track of six lanes was unsafe for competition and the tennis courts were filled with so many divots that special rules are necessary for matches held there.  The complete lack of plumbing and bathroom facilities was another serious shortcoming.

Since both the adults and the youth of our area extensively use these facilities, this project benefited the entire area.  The goal of this project was to improve the football field, track, tennis courts, concessions, bleachers, scoreboard and parking facility that the Viroqua community has used for nearly forty years.  The Viroqua Area Foundation also wanted to upgrade the facility with a walking path, restrooms, athletic shelter, handicap accessibility and an equipment storage area. 

The goal for the entire project was $1.9 million dollars that was raised in six years.  The project was separated into three phases.  Phase one which consisted of the tennis courts and part of the walking path and this was completed in 2006.  Phase II began in August of 2007 and this phase consisted of the track, football field, scoreboard & bleachers.  The  completion date of phase II was July of 2008.  The final phase of the project was the pavilion, restrooms, fencing, seeding, tree planting & parking lot.  The completion date of phase III was September of 2009.  This project has brought events and recreational opportunities into our community to promote local businesses and healthy living.

The Viroqua Area Foundation is still accepting donations for the athletic facility in order to maintain the facilities. With declining school budgets we believe that continuing to raise funds for maintenance will assist in repairing the facilities for the future.
